Iceland

What January blues? James and I decided to banish those dreaded January blues by booking a last minute trip to Iceland. After managing to blag some cheap flights my mum and dad decided to join us also which was just fab! We booked it for my birthday weekend and it was definitely one I’m going to remember for the rest of my life.

Right I’m going to be honest here guys if your thinking of going to Iceland the flights are possibly the cheapest part of the holiday which we learned after booking haha. However it’s 100% worth it to see all the beautiful natural sights Iceland has to offer. As we booked pretty last minute we struggled to get a hotel for the 4 of us within the heart of the city. We then decided to have a look on AirBnB and we were soooooo glad we did! The apartments are a lot more chic than the majority of the hotels and a fraction of the price. We managed to blag one right on Laugavegar Road which is exactly where you want to be! The location was incredible and the apartment was just beautiful. Super modern, clean and chic and I cannot recommend staying here enough.

Check the apartment out here!

Hallgrímskirkja Church was visible from our apartment and a 2 minute walk!

We booked all our excursions before we went online so we didn’t need to worry about anything once we got there. Excursions we managed to squeeze in were the Northern Lights tour, The Blue Lagoon and The Golden Circle tour.

We went with Reykjavik Excursions which is one of the main companies. The Northern Lights are pot luck because it’s done to mother nature however we were super lucky enough to see them. If the Aurora activity is low and theres not much chance of you seeing the lights they don’t take you out and you can get your money back which is ideal. However we didn’t have that problem as the gorgeous green lights came out to play just in time for us. I can’t explain how excited I was about this as it’s always been a dream of mine since I was a kid to experience them.

We booked the Blue Lagoon direct and went for the premium package. This included transfers to and from the Lagoons, queue skip, entrance, robes, slippers, facemarks and a drink. Oh my god this is one of the best experiences of my life! It was surreal going from -10 temperatures into the roasting hot waters of the lagoon. We were literally bobbing about it for hours and in pool bar was fabulous. All the drinks they have to offer are just yummy I had a sparkling sweet fizzy wine and a apple cider yum. The face masks are amazing, my skin was literally glowing afterwards (and a tad burnt oops) You have to do this if you are going to Iceland it’s an absolute must!

The Golden Circle tour was my personal favourite. Having to get up at 7am on my birthday was totally worth it to see all the beautiful sights Iceland has to offer. We visited the likes of Kerid Crater, Gullfoss and the Geyser Hot Springs to name a few. The trip was around 9 hours and undoubtedly one of the best days of my life.

We were a little apprehensive about what the food was going to be like after hearing the stereotypes about Puffin and Shark (which they do have on offer) however the food was just incredible. Everywhere we ate the food was just amazing. Amazing quality of meat etc and although you paying 4x what you would eating out at home it’s worth it. One of our favourite places was Grillmarkaðurinn which we went to for my birthday. It was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. Aww I’m starving now thinking about it. Check it out if your heading to Reykjavik guys!

I could babble on for hours about Reykjavik and I was only there for 3 days! It’s just one of those places you have to visit in your lifetime. Beautiful sights, things to do and food… what more do you want?! There’s loads of things such as snowmobiling and whale spotting which we never managed to fit in on our super packed weekend. Who knows maybe we’ll go back one day…
